The Malawi Police Service and the Department of Immigration on Thursday arrested and detained five Mozambicans who were employed by Corredor Logístico Integrado do Norte (CLN) for working in the country without permits.

Confirming the development in an interview yesterday, Immigration public relations officer, Martha Gonondo, said the five were arrested in Zomba.arrest

“Three of them were later released because they had valid temporary residence permits,” Gonondo said.

She further said the other two— Salvador ArturMuianga and Arao Elias EnosseMauaie—would be  deported today through Nayuchi Border Post because they were working on a visitors permit which is contrary to Section 37 (B) of Immigration Act.

According to a source, the two were working as supervisors.

The source further said the pair have been working for CLN using visitors’ permits, which they would renew upon expiry at Malawi’s ports of entry.

CLN is a partnership between Mozambican state port, a rail company called Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Mocambique (CFM) and Vale Logistics Limited—a Brazilian company.

Weekend Nation’s efforts to get comments from the company’s executives were unsuccessful as their mobile phones in Mozambique could not be reached.
